How far will they go? Hoteliers and innkeepers must surely lie awake nights inventing new ways to knock their guests' socks off, on high authority, that deep in the back offices of a certain Ritzy Naples hotel, a sort of cult gathering takes place every morning, where senior executives gloat over their most recent triumphs, and actual gold stars are handed out. I set out this past summer to see just how far "over the top" Florida hoteliers have gone to seduce and pamper the weekend guest. Many months, many goose-down pillows and chocolate-dipped strawberries, many silk robes and personal butlers later (I had to be thorough, didn't I?), I'm pleased to report that the Florida resorts, hotels and inns truly have pushed the envelope to meet and exceed the standards of the most glamorous world destinations. I admit it. I'm enchanted by the butler thing. I've always wanted two of my very own - a silver-haired English gentleman with a stiff upper lip for the office, and a hand-carved wooden one with a silver tray so guests may leave their calling cards at home. I've never found just the right English gentleman, and the wooden one seemed so, well, wooden. But nowadays, I can choose from a menu of butlers and concierges whenever I travel. Imagine, if you will, my check-in scenario, a composite of some three dozen hotels, from island-chic romantic getaways to seaside resorts to glitzy city hotels: Welcome to our resort/hotel/inn/island. Here are the keys to your suite and your private elevator. Your robe and slippers have been set out for you. The owner requests the pleasure of your company for a private piano concert in the conservatory. There will be live jazz with your complimentary breakfast on the veranda. The manager cordially invites you to join his small party for some deep-sea fishing. A complete staff awaits you in our multi-million dollar spa. Or just say the word and we'll arrange for your exotic treatment at surfside, at poolside or in the Zen garden. Please enjoy our elaborate infinity-edge pools (we have several), with swim-up bar service, waterfalls, caverns and underwater Bach concertos. Should you feel a trifle warm as you lounge beside the pool or on the Florida beach, just display this monogrammed flag. Your Pool Concierge will instantly appear to spritz you with chilled Evian or place an icy towel on your brow. If you find it bothersome to travel from the Florida beach to your suite during the day so we offer a private cabana complete with refrigerator, bar, shower and lounge furnishings (and, of course, catered dining by your friendly Beach Concierge). In addition to the usual hotel or resort amenities, your Adventure Concierge is standing by to arrange your skydiving lesson, your swim with the manatees, or a private lesson at our exclusive Equestrian Center. Naturally, your Private Butler will unpack for you. Your suite will be freshened by your housekeeper thrice daily (be assured that our housekeeping staff has been trained to the exacting standards of a royal household). On your pillow each evening, you will find a perfect blossom from our orchid garden, complimentary key lime cookies, or a chocolate truffle. Do notice (if you'll forgive the mention), the toilet paper roll crowned with a tissue-paper hibiscus. Should you arise at dawn for a run, our doorman will greet you on return with a water and lemonade. If you prefer a gentler workout, please join our sunrise yoga session at water's edge. For a truly unique mind-body-spirit experience, let our WatsuTM master transport you to bliss with our Zen-inspired Japanese water dance. Our personal en suite spas bath is nothing short of heavenly, appointed with 250-thread Egyptian cotton bath sheets, custom-milled French soaps and Asian aromatherapy bath amenities. You'll sleep like an angel on our "Heavenly Bed," a ten-layer blend of the purest white linens, with pillows, mattress tops and duvets of goose-down. For the perfect end to the perfect evening, summon your hotel or resort Bath Concierge to draw a bath with a sensuous blend of oils and bath salts. The experience includes a loofah-sponge, a bath pillow and, of course, a split of perfectly chilled champagne. And finally, romance is our specialty. Should the magic of the moment so inspire you, do contact our hotels Romance Counselor or Wedding Concierge. No romantic fantasy is impossible, from a declaration of devotion engraved across the sky to a wedding ceremony under the sea. If perchance we've overlooked any tiny detail to make your stay most memorable, just press the button to summon your Personal Butler."

Luxury Travel - On the Water
Cruising is a great way to get around and take in the sun, smiling and exchanging waves with strangers on passing boats. And it's always fun to check out yachts that rival aircraft carriers in size and have a helicopter perched on top. Spoil yourself even more and check into the Harbor Beach Marriott Resort & Spa. Its gorgeous waterfront view is a backdrop for one of the top 100 spas in the world. Slip into a soft robe and sip on ice water infused with lemon and cucumber while waiting in The Spa's co-ed lounge for a warm stone therapy massage or manicure. You can enjoy the ocean from the urbane and luxurious Atlantic, which has its own spa across from its namesake Atlantic Ocean. Stop by Trina, the resort's signature restaurant, and take a killer Cosmo with you upstairs for something to sip on during your pedicure. Once you look and feel great, you'll want to see more of what the waterways have to offer. Waterfront munching is a long-standing tradition with locals, so go with the flow and dock at Charley's Crab for the freshest seafood or Taverna Opa, where Greek food is accented by dancing on tables. If you happen to cruise by on a Sunday, don't miss brunch at the Blue Moon Fish Co. in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea. If you didn't bring your own boat, let someone else navigate with the Water Bus (or Water Taxi as it is commonly called). You can stop at the 15th Street Fisheries for the evening pelican count and nautically inspired dining upstairs, or hop off at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66's Grille 66 or dine in downtown Fort Lauderdale's Arts & Entertainment district at the River House. The Water Taxi makes it easy to get around the Intracoastal and the New River, particularly on weekends when places to dock are scarce. And a night trip has the added benefit of a cool breeze and romantic lighting provided by the dramatic backdrop of riverfront homes.
You can also take the Water Taxi to the Riverside Hotel on Las Olas Boulevard, adjacent to the historic Stranahan House, and to Las Olas Riverfront (where there's easy access to the Museum of Art, Performing Arts Center and Museum of Discovery). Or sip a cool cocktail while enjoying the enchanted sounds of the piano at Interlude on the New River. Speaking of the Royal Family, take their lead and ease back to land and the Museum of Art. Once there, become intimately acquainted with one of the most famous princesses of our time at the Diana: A Celebration exhibition through December 31. An up-close glimpse of her magnificent wedding dress (with seemingly endless train) is well worth the visit. And after you admire the classic outfits that made Princess Diana a global icon, go ahead and give in to your urge to shop. The nearby Galleria mall is sure to have something for your closet in the yacht. While shopping, check out the new Galleria hotsports - Blue Martini, Capital Grille and Red Star Taver.
Luxury Travel - Style & Sophistication Dine in Moroccan splendor. Be chauffeured through the brick streets by horse drawn carriage. Shop specialty boutiques for everything from art and ornaments to chocolates and fine wines. Set a breezy late-afternoon picnic and stay until sundown. Then get dapper for jazz and cocktails. St. Augustine's historical glamour is worth dressing up for.
Begin at the Casa Monica Hotel, where opulent surroundings engage the senses. From The Casa Monica is strewn with royal flourishes that attest to its castle-like exterior. Rooms are appointed in mahogany and wrought iron, and luxury suites in the hotel's five towers offer antique furnishings, circular living rooms and generous views. Once ensconced in your lavish retreat, you can choose from a bevy of services and activities to define your visit. Restored to its former status as a landmark 1880's resort, an atmosphere of first class leisure pervades the hotel.
Take a dip in the second-story pool, arrange a horseback riding escapade or duck into one of the hotels upscale boutiques. Have a round at a Jack Nicklaus-designed course or set off to the Casa Monica's Serenata Beach Club, where you can while away the St. Augustine's cultural and historical riches will keep you moving about town, so don your sunglasses and walking shoes. For first-rate cultural immersion, tour the Colonial Spanish Quarter. Experience the Ancient City's Spanish heritage in three-dimensional form at this living history museum, where costumed interpreters depict eighteenth century tradesmen and women engaged in their daily tasks.
From here it's a short step in time to Old St. Augustine Village, a group of houses, courtyards and gardens constructed between 1790 and 1910. You'll discover galleries and exhibits here that bring history close enough to touch. For an unparalleled view of
Afterwards, explore the city's galleries on the first Friday of each month during the evening Artwalk. The St. Augustine Sightseeing Train is available for transport to the Walk, where you can see new exhibits and enjoy the street music. Cap off your splendid stay in St. Augustine with a trip to the antique shops clustered around San Marco and King Streets. Here you'll find European furniture, estate items, art glass, costume jewelry, antique stained glass windows and other innumerable wonders. Located in what used to be the Hotel Alcazar's pool, the Lightner Antique Mall smartly mixes the old with the older. St. Augustine's historic luxury and exquisite cultural treasures will satisfy the greatest of Gatsbys.
Luxury Travel - High Society Roaming Of course, the region is home to other great museums as well, but those listed above are in the heart of downtown St. Petersburg, all practically within walking distance of my hotel, the Renaissance Vinoy Resort and Golf Club. So, during a recent long weekend, I could easily spend my days strolling galleries filled with high art and spend my evenings sampling the best of St. Petersburg's high society life. And what better high society hotel is there than the Renaissance Vinoy Resort and Golf Club? With the main structure built in 1925, this elegant, historic hotel continues to impress visitors with its amenities, impeccable service, spacious rooms and award-winning restaurants. In the evenings, guests linger over drinks on the wide veranda, rocking in cushioned wicker chairs and staying cool under ceiling fans. My weekend began with an intimate dinner downtown at the small but sophisticated Redwoods, within walking distance of the Vinoy. It was easy to relax in the restaurant's "woodsy" atmosphere; the décor is mainly shades of brown and white, and a tree stump serves as the hostess stand. My fiancé tried the grilled escolar, a South American fish that tastes like swordfish, but better. My herb-roasted chicken came atop creamy risotto and baby asparagus. The next morning found me in the galleries of the Dalí Museum, surrounded by the Spanish artist's surrealistic paintings, films and sculpture. The current exhibit, Dalí & Mass Culture, runs through Jan. 30. It includes just nine pieces from the museum's permanent collection, television advertisements and photographs featuring Dalí, and Vogue magazine covers designed by the artist. "Destino," a short animated film by Dalí and Walt Disney, is shown regularly. Lunch was at Fresco Waterfront Bar & Grill, one of St. Petersburg's few bayfront restaurants. Located downtown at the entrance to the Pier, the restaurant offers superb seafood, live music and a great view of the bay. Afterwards, I took the short walk to the Florida International Museum, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. At the nearby Museum of Fine Arts, the comprehensive permanent collection contains works from such well-known masters as O'Keeffe and Monet. Current temporary exhibits feature Italian Renaissance ceramics, vintage photographs and Asian artwork containing images of birds, beasts and blossoms.. Later that night, rather than picking just one restaurant, we decided to sample drinks and appetizers at some of the city's hottest nightspots. At the Martini Bar in the BayWalk entertainment complex, I chose a Key Lime Martini from a long list of "-tini" drinks, along with the bar's cheese-smothered, decadent Mediterranean flatbread. At E - A Tapas Lounge, we feasted on fried sweet potatoes with spicy sour cream and a mozzarella and tomato salad. At A Taste for Wine, we lounged on a balcony overlooking Central Avenue, sipping French white wine and nibbling rich French cheeses. The next morning, we waved goodbye to St. Petersburg. However, our high society vacation wasn't really over; to complete it, we plan to revisit the city April 3 for the Honda Grand Prix. This upscale event shouldn't be missed, as the Indy Racing League race will be the first ever held on the streets of downtown St. Petersburg.
Luxury Travel - Elegant Escapes
Islamorada, Florida Keys There's something irresistible about halfway marks. They invite the traveler to temporarily forsake the car, to step outside, feel the terrain, sample regional cuisine and meet the locals.
Islamorada, half-way between Miami and Key West, goes a step further: It summons you to stay. And who can resist, considering the village is a sanctuary of exuberant island culture? Brightly painted art studios and galleries, vibrant cafés, trendy boutiques (including splendid vintage collections) and some of the Keys' most exquisite hotels are tucked among the sapodilla trees.
Before checking out the village scene, check into Casa Morada. This 1950s motel turned tropically-mod lodge has 16 suites with fashionable finds such as carved iron beds, seashell sconces and woven cane chairs. My suite has a cork-floored sitting area, step-up whirlpool tub, and second-floor lanai embraced by palm fronds. It overlooks long, exotic gardens with a rock grotto, a bocce court, sea view cabanas and a lagoon that winds into Florida Bay. From the swimming pool set in a sandy island, I watch great white herons alighting in the Everglades.
Fashion photo producers love Islamorada. In fact, a production team (complete with wispy-waisted models) fills Casa Morada during my stay. The shots taken here and at the nearby Moorings will show up in Vogue, Elle and other top fashion pages. Next to the Moorings, luxurious Cheeca Lodge & Spa draws celebrities to its annual George Bush Bonefishing Tournament. All 202 rooms were stylishly redone in 2003 (to the tune of $12 million) and the 27-acre oceanfront grounds with nine-hole course is more lush than ever.
Islamorada's beaches are beautiful. Since most have private access, one of the best ways to sink your toes in the sand is to have lunch at Morada Bay. A white plantation-style house with watermelon-colored shutters, it has a brick terrace overlooking a stunning beach and bay. Next door and sharing the same beach, Pierre's serves formal French cuisine among furnishings from the Ivory Coast. The elegant downstairs bar is spectacular at sunset. Order an orchid-studded mandarin martini and witness the sand turn pastel. You'll be glad you stopped - and stayed - halfway.
The Fairways of Palm Aire Resort in Pompano Beach is like a home away from home. At least, that's how I felt when I arrived after a long drive. The resort is really it's own little community, with pools, Jacuzzis, fitness center, salon, full-service day spa, sand volleyball court and mini-golf course. The elegantly furnished condominiums have all you'd need for an extended vacation, from kitchen appliances and laundry detergent to a DVD player.
The bustling metropolis of Fort Lauderdale is within a short drive. Even Miami is close. But there's a lot to do right in Pompano Beach, as I found out over the next few days.
Atlantic Coast Luxury
After checking in and picking up a packet listing the various resort activities (Latin and ballroom dancing lessons, coconut bowling, a steel drum band by one of the four pools and a frozen drink-making class were some of the offerings), I drove to the Sabal Palm building.
My fourth floor suite opened onto a spacious living and dining area with dark wood and rattan furniture, and a large balcony. One wing had a bedroom with two double beds, a full bathroom and a washer and dryer. The master suite was off the living room and contained a king bedroom and a huge bathroom with a Jacuzzi tub, which I vowed to take full advantage of.
The first thing on my agenda was to check out the beach, so I drove Pompano Beach's main drag, Atlantic Boulevard, to the Atlantic Ocean, where golden sand and deep blue waves greeted me. For a casual, fresh seafood dinner on the Intracoastal Waterway, I took a 15-minute drive south to the lively Shooters Waterfront Café in Fort Lauderdale.
Playtime in Pompano
The next day, after a breakfast of almond challah bread French toast at Scoogin's, across from the resort, I checked out Pompano Park, home to the only live harness horse racing track in the state. A sixth-floor fine dining room overlooks the track, so racing fans can dine in style.
After my tour of the race track, I indulged in an hour-long soak in my huge Jacuzzi tub. Refreshed, I headed out to Darrel & Oliver's Café Maxx, named a four-star restaurant by the Mobil Travel Guide, winner of Florida Trend magazine's Golden Spoon Award for 10 consecutive years, and holding the highest rating of all restaurants currently in operation in Florida in the Zagat Guide of South Florida.
The intimate restaurant lived up to its reputation. My waiter was ready with suggestions - all of which turned out to be perfect - for each course. The atmosphere was relaxing and sophisticated. There were fresh orchids on my table and paper lights hung down over the booths. From the signature sweet onion-crusted snapper with Madeira sauce to the Hawaiian vintage chocolate soufflé cake served with vanilla bean ice cream, the food was exceptional.
Spa-riffic! The scene reminded me of one of the reasons most people come here: The Palm Aire Country Club's four championship courses and its executive course were designed by some of golf's best architects. I made a mental note that my fiancée (a die-hard golfer) and I should return for a golf/spa weekend. But why wait till then? I headed to The Spa at Palm Aire, where I felt relaxed as soon as I walked in the door. Soft music mixed with the sounds of water trickling over fountains put me at ease. I changed into a bathrobe and slippers and settled into a comfy chair, sipping orange tea and awaiting my facial. The Spa offers all kinds of treatments, including hot stone massages, a Dead Sea mud treatment, salt-loofah body scrubs, body wraps and facials. Resort guests receive a 20 percent discount. My facial, called the Deep Cleansing Facial, included cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing, not to mention a wonderful scalp massage and paraffin treatments for my hands and feet. It was the ultimate in pampering. The strawberry-scented moisturizing cream left my hands and feet soft for days afterward, a pleasant reminder of my trip.
Luxury comes in equal parts for him and her at The Plaza Resort & Spa in Daytona Beach, where couples can indulge in spa treatments together. The resort itself is one of the oldest in Florida; this grand dame has hosted couples looking for a luxurious getaway for more than 100 years and is highly skilled in meeting your every need. After all, the couple that spas together, stays together. This does not describe my husband Bobby. He rarely even looks in the mirror. Perhaps it's because the ones in our home are at my eye level, one foot lower than his. For, although I've just turned 50, I still have a strong sense of "girl," and after our treatments at the Ocean Waters Spa, had the glowing skin tone of a nubile spring breaker. So did he. Anny was Bobby's divine guardian, who massaged, hydro-therapied and exfoliated him, as John did me. At Ocean Waters Spa, couples choose the gender they feel most comfortable with. Male or female, pampering is part of the package. Plan on leaving not only firmed, but affirmed. Anny commented that Bobby and I seemed to be a "happy" couple. And that was at the onset of the tantalizing treatments ahead. If these therapies could cement an already solid foundation, what magic might they muster for couples romantically challenged by kids, bills and the stresses of career and extended family?
If your not hungry for that fabulous, sophisticated, exquisite holiday yet, you will be. Here's a few more fantasy spots to make your mouth water: Staying at Ocean Walk Resort is simply the best vacation decision you can make! Located on a beautiful stretch of pedestrian-only beach, Ocean Walk Resort is an impressive 80,000-square-foot resort and entertainment complex. A wide variety of great restaurants and unique specialty shops, plus an amphitheater and other entertainment and luxury amenities, make this a self-contained world within one of the great playgrounds on the Eastern shore.
Royal Mansions The perfect location! Experience and watch rocket launches, cruise ships, fishing fleets, windsurfers, sea turtles and porpoises from your balcony or the beach! Only forty-five minutes from all the attractions of Orlando, yet a world away in the "Real Florida."
